About
I am a dual citizen, US and Canada. New York is my home - it is where I ‘recognize’ people, it is where I grew up. I moved to Canada after grad school, stayed for 20 years, then came back to the US and stayed there for 20 years. Now, I am back in Canada where I choose to live. Why?
Family is here, but life is generally more expensive. Health care is available, but for me, it is not as good as in the US. I can work in either country, but I choose to be here. The deciding factor is the prevailing attitude of the people.
The US has become a country of conflict. Positions are polarized. There is systemic racism and underlying unresolved antisemitism. There is a reluctance to unite. A culture of ignorance is flourishing: there is a desire to reject knowledge, intelligence, and the subtle implications of details. While there is no war within its borders, it is often difficult to feel safe. I don’t see this changing anytime soon.
The difference between the two countries comes down to the balance between individual rights and social justice.
